The “Greatest Coastal Walk in New Zealand”,
This award winning Queen Charlotte Track walk starts at Ship Cove and finishes at Anakiwa.
This 71km trail is usually walked over 4 days with 3 overnight stops strategically spaced along the way.
Although the track can be walked in either direction it is normally walked from Ship Cove to Anakiwa. The water taxis that take you to the start, return you to Picton and transfer your luggage between lodges all work their schedules in this direction.
4 Day Queen Charlotte Track Walk
Day 1: Ship Cove to Endeavour Inlet and the “No Road Inn”
Catch a morning Beachcomber Cruises water taxis from Picton to the start of the track at Ship Cove. Book the beachcomber Cruises “Great Track Pass” which includes Picton return fares and luggage transfers between lodges (maximum 15kg per bag).
All you need to carry is a light day pack, water, lunch, and of course your camera.
You also have the option to spend 1½ hours on Motuara Island bird sanctuary before starting your walk from Ship Cove. (Summer Months only)
The days walk includes coastal beaches with swimming opportunities, ridges with panoramic views overlooking the Cook Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound, and lush podocarp forest.
A 5 hours walk will see you at your accommodation for the night at the head of Endeavour Inlet, the “No Road Inn”.
Day 2: No Road Inn to Camp Bay
This days walk follows the coastline around Endeavour Inlet to Camp Bay, passing through regenerating forest and past farmlets and hamlets.
Once again there are small beaches along the way where you can stop for lunch and a swim.
After a 4 hour easy walk you will arrive at your chosen accommodation for the night at Mahana Lodge or Punga Cove.
Day 3: Camp Bay to Portage Bay
Today’s walk takes you up onto the ridge line overlooking on one side the Queen Charlotte Sound and on the other Kenepuru Sound.
This is the most challenging walk of the 4 days but the fabulous views make it all worth while.
Accommodation at the end of the day’s walk is either at the Portage Hotel, Lochmara Lodge, or Debretts Pelorus.
A great alternative is to catch a water taxi to Raetihi Lodge for this or an extra night or rest day.
Day 4: Portage Bay to Anakiwa
Your last day on the Queen Charlotte Track passes through a melody of open farmland with stunning sea views and native forest with abundant bird life.
Beachcomber Cruises will transfer you from the Outward Bound wharf in Anakiwa to their Picton office.
Or if you dont feel like walking the whole 71 km you will enjoy our more relaxed Boutique lodge 3 Day Walk.
